Where to Begin

  • Parking is available at the Rycroft Gate entrance to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.

Trail Start

  • Begin your adventure at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, one of the world’s great botanical gardens, nestled at the foot of Table Mountain. 

Trail End

  • We return via Nursery Ravine, descending back into the forest and finishing at Kirstenbosch once again.
  • Can be extended to the Table Mountain Cableway.

Trail Overview

Skeleton Gorge is a lush and shaded ascent up the eastern slopes of Table Mountain.

  • Duration 4 to 5-hour round trip
  • Difficulty Moderate to Challenging (requires a good fitness level). Coming down Nursery Ravine can be taxing on the knees.
  • Features Afromontane Forest, streams, ladders, and a summit walk to the Hely Hutchinson Reservoir

  • Stay on the path.
  • Pace yourself and stay hydrated.

  • Footwear suitable for hiking (with good grip)

Notes

  • The trail includes steep sections and ladders, which may be challenging for those with a fear of heights.
  • Views are mostly forested, therefore less panoramic than other Table Mountain routes.
  • While it doesn’t offer sweeping city views during the ascent, the summit rewards hikers with stunning scenery and a sense of accomplishment.
  • The hike can be extended to the Table Mountain Cableway for a longer adventure. Contact us for details.
